For thousands of years, we have been in awe of these truly magical creatures. In fact, we really can’t get enough of them.
But why? Why are we so obsessed with these magnificent creatures?
What makes owls so special?
Owls have been used by Humans for thousands of years. As companions and as hunters, guardians and friends.
The Little Owl was the companion of Athena, the Greek goddess of wisdom. This is one reason why owls symbolise learning and knowledge.
But Athena was also an incredible warrior goddess and the owl was also seen as the protector of armies going into war.
They are excellent hunters and highly intelligent which made them awesome hunting partners!
Owls are also excellent pest control! A farmers best friend, a barn owl will help control rodents around the farm!
Owls have always had a place in our lives, no wonder we have always loved these beautiful creatures.
Barn Owl
No. In short! PLEASE don't do that!
OK, I'm not much for preaching BUT please DO NOT go and get an owl because you think they look cool. Or easy. Or fun. I mean, hey they are cool and fun but they are a very specialist animal to keep and require a lot of knowledge so don't just go and get one.
I think recently, the upswing in even more interest in owls as 'pets' has come from the wizarding world of Harry Potter.
Man, I LOVE those books. In fact, you'll notice as you get to know us, that a lot of our animals are named after Harry Potter characters.
But whilst wizards and witches have magical animals, us muggles sadly do not. Our owls can't deliver post for example.
Hedwig, Harry's owl in the stories is a Snowy owl. She may look beautiful however a Snowy owl is capable of doing some serious damage!
