The Samoyed.
If you remotely like dogs (which a certain number of the population DO!) you may have been enchanted by The Samoyed.
A very distinct breed, they are hard to miss, easy to love and impossible to forget.
Wait though, everyone says that about ‘their’ breed, right?
Well, yes, you are right. Everyone loves their breed (if they have a particular one) so I’m going to share with you why Samoyeds stole my heart a long time ago.
It started with a fluke really.
We wanted a dog and had settled on a Samoyed after a lot of researching. David has asthma and I had read that Samoyeds were one breed that seemed to not affect asthma sufferers. CHECK.
They are brilliant with children I had also read and we were hoping to have a baby quite soon. CHECK.
The more I read about the breed, I thought that it was the perfect breed for us.
Originally from Siberia, the dogs were part of the Samoyede tribe. Real working dog at the heart of the tribe, the Samoyed was used to pull sleds, herd reindeer, keep children warm at night; they were a fundamental part of life.
One of the 14 oldest breeds of dog with genetic footprints closest to wolves, but friendly, loving and sociable. They are incredibly loyal and need to be ‘in’ the family, around their humans as much as possible and love nothing better than laying at your feet, (ON you is preferable!) and just being with their family is all they want.
How do you keep them SO white?!
As a Samoyed owner, I’m very used to people staring at my dogs. There aren’t many where we live and they are quite a striking breed, so people do often stare.
Especially if we take all five out together for a run, it is quite the sight!
However, once people get over the shock of five big white fluffy beasts running around, normally they comment on their coats. It often goes something like,
‘Goodness, aren’t they hard to keep clean?’
I always reply the same way.
‘Truly, not really! If they get muddy, leave it to dry and it falls out or you can brush it out. We only tend to bath ours when they get a bit smelly. They kind of have self cleaning coats and so it’s best not to over bath them we find.’
That statement is often met with complete shock and surprise! Yes, they take some brushing and if you have one that HATES being brushed (we do have one and it’s a hard job brushing him!) it’s tough, but brushing aside, it’s quite easy.
So, there you have it.
Samoyeds, magical coat, magical breed.
A memorial for our two beautiful dogs who sadly left us far too soon. Hermione and Sirius. We miss your smiling faces.
